Reasons Why Your Air Conditioning Cools Your Home Unevenly
Posted on: 14 March 2018
When you turn on your air conditioner, you expect it to run fairly even in each room. However, in many cases, that doesn't happen. While uneven cooling can be a sign that your air conditioning system is not working overall, there are sometimes other reasons for that problem. Here are three common reasons why your air conditioning system is cooling unevenly and what you can do about it.
Blocked Vents or Ducts
If your air vents are obstructed in any way, then it reduces the amount of cool air that can reach your room. The same goes for excess dirt and debris inside your ducts which can also be a health hazard. Check your vents to see if they open and close easily and remove any rugs or furniture that may be blocking them. If this doesn't work, then you may need an inspection and cleaning of the whole system.
Uninsulated Ducts
If you have long runs of ducts running through areas that aren't usually insulated, such as your attic or basement, then there's a chance that the rooms at the end of the line will be warm. The longer and more complicated your duct system is, the more likely it will have leaks as well. In these cases, insulating those ducts may make a big difference in reducing uneven cooling.
Thermostat Problems
If you only have a thermostat in some of the rooms or one for an entire floor, then it will be harder to control the temperature in those rooms that don't have one. Where your thermostats are located can also make a big difference. If they are located near where there's a heat or cooling source, then your air conditioning may not cool efficiently across your home. If your home is exceptionally large, then you may wish to have a zoned system. Zoned systems allow for greater control and can even reduce energy consumption in some cases.
These are just a sampling of some of the reasons why your home may cool unevenly that are directly related to your air conditioning system. Other reasons not directly related to your unit include having thin or uncovered windows, poor room insulation and how the room is used. Rooms with lots of electronics or those being used by a lot of people may run warmer despite the air conditioner running at the same level as other rooms. If you find that your air ducts or system needs cleaning and repairing, then contact someone who specializes in heating, ventilation and air conditioning for a checkup and service.
